In my area, students and researchers are looking toward RMIT to build the connections they need to make an impact. I believe that our students are often much more deeply concerned with issues around sustainability, but at the same time feel powerless to actually make a difference – not having the necessary network and systemic understanding. Transparency across what we do and how we work with other organisations may help empower the ones with idealistic ideas to actually pursue them. See less

Other organisations are looking to work collaboratively with RMIT to augment capability on both sides and enable greater societal impact together. How do we create the space for this to happen? Often the needs driving the collaboration on each side are very different, they don't match. Researchers/lecturers don't have the time or cannot see an immediate benefit for something that benefits RMIT at an enterprise level. Organisations may prefer in-kind collaboration and not monetary input. These collaborations require a great deal of nurturing over years – how do you balance the individual vs the enterprise? We need to provide space and resources for our employees to pursue these longer term goals. Of course these should congregate around identified strategic goals of the university. See less

Enabling an environment that is attractive for quality talent; Removing academic/non-academic divide so as to share and grow knowledge and capabilities; Closing the gap between students/researchers and RMIT employees to develop greater empathy for the 'on-the-ground' lived experience of our key 'customers' and to co-create knowledge and skills throughout the org. Providing the leadership that enables us to bring our missions to fruition. Our desire is to work better across silos, to build multidisciplinary responses to major global or societal issues, to identify and work with the world's best communities, government and industry – we have some platforms in place but are they working at optimal levels? Are we trying to resource too many goals rather than focus in on what we could really achieve as an organisation? Our goals need to be effectively resourced and potentially in this environment our leaders should select the big missions that we know we can achieve and resource and use those as the transformational piece whilst we maintain those other areas through a review process. We often think of innovation and impact in terms of freedom and creativity. That's good, but they seem to be just as much about accountability and responsibility – social, ethical, environmental, personal. Collectively building the tools, processes and culture that help make that side of innovation and impact real seems important. See less

I think the role of a university is to test visions for their impact, their workability, their levels of inclusion, their ability to advance from a static status quo, and THEN to advocate for that vision amongst its community. That community includes students and staff but then locally and nationally and hence to those levels of governments who can fund and implement the vision in policy. I think we have seen COVID test the institution of governments, the role of and capability (and trust) in the public sector for policy development. Rightly or wrongly the pressure on the public sector means thought leaders like universities must step in to assist as well as preparing the thinkers of the future. See less
